Collapse ▲Display your creativity and imagination in a family-friendly, county-wide competition. N.C. Cooperative Extension in Pamlico County will be hosting a Hay Bale Decorating contest.
This hay bale decorating contest will have three divisions: Pamlico County History and Heritage, Celebrate 4-H, and Fall Fun with youth and adult categories in both divisions. Individuals/Families may submit one entry in each division. Submissions will be compiled and released on the N.C. Cooperative Extension of Pamlico County website and so that everyone can vote for their favorites. Participants who submit entries in the Celebrate 4-H Division have the option of having their entries submitted in the State 4-H Hay Bale Contest. The first-place winners will be awarded a ten dollar gift card, 2nd and 3rd place winners of each category in all divisions, will receive a certificate.
To enter, register on Eventbrite, select the category, and division. Once you have registered you will receive instructions on how to submit your photos. Entries will be accepted until November 6, 2020, at 5 p.m.
Submitted photos will be available for judging on Instagram from November 9–November 13. After open judging closes a committee of judges will place the top three liked phots of each division based on adherence to theme, creativity, and aesthetic appeal. Winners will be announced on November 20.
Competition Divisions/Categories
Pamlico County History & Heritage: Bales should be designed to reflect and promote life in Pamlico-past or present. We have a rich and diverse history, so there are plenty of areas to choose from for your display. Suggested ideas include, but are not limited to: agriculture and farming, fishing, the heritage museum, hunting, and wildlife.

- Individual 14-18
- Individual 19 and up
Families, Organizations, or Businesses: two or more members of the same household regardless of age
Celebrate 4-H: Bales should be designed to celebrate and promote NC 4-H. Suggested ideas include, but are not limited to: 4-H Project areas (STEM, service, Outdoor and/or Healthy Living, Culinary Arts, Communications, Livestock etc.), 4-H Grows Here, 4-H’s (Head, Heart, Hands, Health), North Carolina Regions, 4-H Districts and the Clover.

Fall Fun: Hay bales should be decorated with a good clean wholesome nature. No vulgar or suggestive decorations will be allowed

Guidelines for Participation
- Participants may submit one entry (either individual or family) in each division.
- Rectangular hay bales should be used.
- Limit your decoration to two (2) – eight (8) bales.
- Each entry should have a slogan communicating the aspect of the theme displayed.
- Entries will be judged on eye appeal, use of materials, creativity, and theme interpretation.
- Hay bales should be decorated with a good clean wholesome nature. No vulgar or suggestive decorations will be allowed.
- No commercial or political party signs of any kind are allowed (any photo containing prohibited content will be disqualified, and will not be displayed on any platform).
- Youth participants must be enrolled in 4HOnline.
