Of course 4-H thinks agriculture education is important. You’re the 4-H Agent, and 4-H is all about agriculture. Well… 4-H might have started in North Carolina with corn clubs in 1909, but it’s been a long time since 4-H has been only about agriculture. 4-H is about lifelong learning, citizenship, leadership, and life skills. We have programs on career development, public speaking, nutrition, sewing, food preservation, digital literacy, electricity, engineering, programing, and so much more. We also have programs about agriculture.

4-H Youth Programs in Pamlico County

This year 4-Her’s in Pamlico County have participated in school embryology programs where youth were able to learn about the life cycle, and how to properly care for chicks. 4-Hers and FFA students raised and showed chickens in the Coastal Plains Chicken show. Youth Participated in the Tri-county circuit show, and are preparing for the Egg-cellent Egg contest. This are all excellent opportunities for youth to learn poultry care, and animal husbandry as well as an aspect of agriculture. However, agriculture is an expansive industry that goes beyond chickens, goats, and cows.

This year we are excited to be working with Pamlico County Christian Academy to bring an agriculture class to their students. Ag Class is an opportunity for youth agricultural literacy. Agriculture literacy is understanding how the agricultural industry works. Beyond understanding where food comes from but also who grows it, agriculture’s effect on the economy, environment, technology, lifestyle and its relationship to livestock.

Hands-On Learning with Fall, Spring, and Summer Crops

Youth will participate in growing fall, spring and summer crops, have the opportunity to conduct experiments and trials, and learn about pioneers in agriculture industry. They will also learn about entrepreneurship, marketing, and careers in agriculture. We are very excited for the opportunity for youth to explore agriculture in a hands-on manner.

Stay Connected: Follow Our Progress

We’ve kicked our agriculture class off by planting some autumn and winter crops in our green house. We invite you to follow along with our progress on our Facebook and Instagram. We are very excited about this learning opportunity!

Exciting Upcoming Monthly Clubs

While we are super stoked with the start of 4-H Ag Class, it’s not the only 4-H Fall Program we are excited about. We have started three monthly clubs: It’s Electric, Sew Much Fun, and Chopped! International.

Exploring Electricity with “It’s Electric”

Its Electric we will be learning about the fundamentals of electricity, build a cool project, and start our 4-H Project record books. It’s Electric is designed to help youth set a foundation for attending 4-H Electric Congress next summer.

Building Sewing Skills with “Sew Much Fun”

Sew Much Fun is for beginner and intermediate sewers to gain or hone their sewing skills. Beginner sewers will choose from two easy first projects, while intermediate sewers will be able to choose their own project within parameters.

Cooking Around the World with “Chopped! International”

Chopped! is back! We are excited to bring our Chopped program with Chopped International! We will be cooking food from all around the world, learning about nutrition and safe food preparation!

Upcoming Egg-cellent Egg Contest & NC State Fair

We are also very excited for our kids participating in the Egg-cellent Egg Contest, they are getting ready to send their eggs of for competition. Fall is the season for competitions so we are very pleased to support our 4-Hers Submitting projects to the NC State Fair 4-H Competitions.
