Collapse ▲Why Agricultural Education Matters
Of course 4-H thinks agricultural education is important. You’re the 4-H Agent, and 4-H is all about agriculture. Well… 4-H might have started in North Carolina with corn clubs in 1909, but it’s been a long time since 4-H has been only about agriculture. 4-H is about lifelong learning, citizenship, leadership, and life skills. We have programs on career development, public speaking, nutrition, sewing, food preservation, digital literacy, electricity, engineering, programming, and so much more. We also have programs about agriculture.
Hands-On Learning Opportunities for 4-H’ers
This year, 4-H’ers in Pamlico County participated in school embryology programs where youth learned about the life cycle and how to properly care for chicks.
Poultry and Animal Husbandry Programs
4-H’ers and FFA students raised and showed chickens in the Coastal Plains Chicken Show. Youth took part in the Tri-County Circuit Show and are now preparing for the Egg-cellent Egg Contest. These are all excellent opportunities for youth to learn poultry care, animal husbandry, as well as an aspect of agriculture. However, agriculture is an expansive industry that goes beyond chickens, goats, and cows.
4-H Ag 101 Class: Agricultural Literacy
This year we are excited to be working with Pamlico County Christian Academy to bring an agriculture class to their students. 4-H Ag 101 class is an opportunity for youth agricultural literacy. Agriculture literacy is understanding how the agricultural industry works, and beyond understanding where food comes from, youth also learn who grows it, agriculture’s effect on the economy, environment, technology, lifestyle, and its relationship to livestock.
Exploring Crops and Experiments
Youth will participate in growing fall, spring, and summer crops. They will have the opportunity to conduct experiments and trials, learn about pioneers in the agriculture industry, and learn about entrepreneurship, marketing, and careers in agriculture. Additionally, they will explore the many kinds of agriculture. We are very excited for the opportunity for youth to explore agriculture in a hands-on manner.
Greenhouse Planting Projects
We’ve kicked our agriculture class off by planting some autumn and winter crops in our greenhouse. We invite you to follow along with our progress on Facebook or Instagram (include links). We are very excited about this learning opportunity!
Other Exciting 4-H Fall Programs
While we are super stoked with the start of 4-H Ag 101 class, it’s not the only 4-H fall program we are excited about. We have started three monthly clubs: It’s Electric, Sew Much Fun, and Chopped! International.
It’s Electric
In It’s Electric, we will be learning about the fundamentals of electricity, build a cool project, and start our 4-H project record books. It’s Electric is designed to help youth set a foundation for attending 4-H Electric Congress next summer.
Sew Much Fun
Sew Much Fun is for beginner and intermediate sewers to gain or hone their sewing skills. Beginner sewers will choose from two easy first projects, while intermediate sewers will be able to choose their own project within parameters.
Chopped! International
Chopped! International is back! We will be cooking food from all around the world, learning about different countries and their culture, as well as nutrition and safe food preparation!
Youth in our Chopped! International class practice safe food preparation while exploring cuisines and cultures from around the world.
Egg-Cellent Egg Contest & State Fair Submissions
We are also very excited for our kids taking part in the Egg-cellent Egg Contest, as they are getting ready to send their eggs off for competition. Fall is the season for competitions, so we are very pleased to support our 4-H’ers who are submitting projects to the NC State Fair.

Participation in all 4-H programs requires enrollment in 4-H Online. You can get a head start on registration for specific programs by enrolling in Pamlico County 4-H Online.
